Impact investing and bio-businesses in Latin AmericaLATAM

2013 to today

Career

More than 13 years across 4 overlapping stages. Each one left a criterion that I now use to evaluate and prepare impact businesses.

The 4 stages

Operate, evaluate, build, finance

Today I prepare impact companies for a specific type of capital, working with funders, investment funds and international cooperation.

Operate

I started my career at Grupo Gloria, in management control for 3 industrial plants and in the evaluation of operational investment projects. In late 2013 I moved to TASA, part of Grupo Breca.

The first years were in research and development. I led products that were not in the company’s portfolio, such as hydrolysates, collagen and protein concentrates. Soluble protein reached the market, with the formulation, process design, scale-up plan and business case I prepared.

In 2017 I led the operations of a new business unit for refined oil and omega-3 concentrates, built for international customers. I took part in the general management committees and brought their requirements into operations, to meet them on time, cost and scope. I balanced the line and standardised the production criteria. Operations became stable, running at full capacity and without bottlenecks. I also designed a strategic costing system for the full line of omega-3 concentrates, a process that yields several fractions.

I then ran 2 fishmeal and fish oil plants at the same time, with more than 200 tonnes per hour of combined capacity. We increased processing speed, lowered unit cost and improved the quality of the finished product. Later I led the operating project portfolio of the company’s 11 plants, which I presented to the executive committees.

In 2023 TASA entrusted me, as Head of Operations, with the challenge of leading its sustainability projects.

Evaluate

Every investment decision starts with a mass balance.

USD 85Min CAPEX evaluated, close to that figure, in 7 countries
See the evaluate stage and its milestones

Since 2021 I have designed, evaluated and implemented industrial investment projects, alongside my other roles. Each project rests on operating metrics and on its return on investment.

I have worked with more than 20 industrial companies in 7 countries, in plants of 8 to 226 tonnes per hour. The CAPEX evaluated adds up to close to USD 85 million, across new businesses, capacity expansions and in-plant sustainability.

This is the same logic of «investable» that I now bring to bio-businesses, applied to industrial assets. I also applied it in entrepreneurship programmes: I designed the business evaluation for Climathon Peru and assessed the technical and economic viability of the Qallariy businesses.

2021 to today

Build

Before financing bio-businesses, I built them.

2,000+producers in the Cotton Nation regenerative framework
See the build stage and its milestones

In 2021 I left corporate life to build something with a wider reach, using the experience I already had. I co-founded Redesign Lab with Eddie Ajalcriña, an impact venture studio for the bioeconomy. In 2025 its portfolio reached USD 26 million in revenue, with 28% growth over 2024. It has developed 10 bio-businesses, with more than 2,500 families in their value chains.

Between 2023 and 2025 I was COO of Cotton Nation and Neofibers. At Cotton Nation I built the scenarios, projections and financial models for capital from NESsT, Lululemon, Beneficial Returns and IDB Lab. I took part in the negotiations until the agreements closed, and put together the operating plans behind each financing. I also led the restructuring of the blended finance with Conservation International: the logical framework, the activities and the strategy.

I led the rollout of the regenerative agriculture framework, with technical assistance and technology-based traceability designed for highly fragmented producers. That plan led to the first Regenagri certification in Peru. At Neofibers I led the operational scale-up plan, the production pilot and cost reduction in the fibre supply. I designed the brand launch in London in 2024.

Today Redesign Lab builds tools on Claude for each stage of a bio-business, from costing to the funder dossier. My role is to find where technology speeds up scaling.

2024 to today

Finance

Today I prepare companies for a specific type of capital.

100+organisations supported in their investment readiness
See the finance stage and its milestones

Since 2024 my work has centred on investment readiness: preparing impact companies for the financing that fits their stage. I work with funders, investment funds and international cooperation. I have supported more than 100 organisations so far, with NESsT, Qallariy, CODESPA and Climathon, among others.

I am Technical Lead of the Impact Investing Unit of Swisscontact in Colombia. The public investment readiness programme works across 3 verticals: sustainable agriculture, natural ingredients and circular economy.

At Fondo de Impacto, as COO and Co-founder, I run the fund’s operations and the Investment Passport platform. My field is the design of the investment thesis and the eligibility criteria for companies.

In 2026 I evaluated 25 bio-businesses for NESsT AmazonBeEco, with IDB Lab, and prepared 8 business plans with their financial models. With CODESPA I taught the business model, costing and financing modules to 68 participants. In Ucayali I lead the access-to-capital component and the design of the first Bio/Builders pilot, with Pruébalo.

All 4 stages are still open. What I learn evaluating a plant or a bio-business carries over to the next company I prepare for capital.
